Day 20: Circle, Mont. to Beach, N.D.

Today ends a big stage of our trip. Twelve days ago we summited Lolo pass, set our watches forward an hour, and chased a thunderstorm into Montana. Since then, we criss-crossed north, over the Divide, into Canada, and back south to the border today where we finally ended the Montana section as we crossed into North Dakota just a few miles west of here.

Today’s ride started off on a long, slow climb out of Circle, up over 3000 feet, then a long, gradual descent into Glendive, where we stopped for lunch. The scenery continued to change throughout the day, from fields of hay, to rocky bluffs and buttes. In Glendive, we met I-94, which we rode on for about 30 miles today. We were a little bit concerned about riding on the interstate, but it ended up being perfectly fine, with a very wide shoulder and relatively low traffic the whole way. Following 94 also meant we were able to enjoy about 15 miles of quiet bypass roads between Glendive and Wibaux. Winds came out of the west again today, and we saw quite a few groups of touring cyclists heading west. We stopped to talk to one group of younger guys and had several generations of Trek 520 bikes represented, as he was riding an 80s model across from New York.

For dinner, we ate at the only restaurant in town, The Backyard, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, and had reverted to its original menu and prices. The bartender very much enjoyed introducing the menu to everyone saying “tonight we’re partying like it’s 1999.”

Tomorrow we’ll head to Richardson where we hope to stay with the Benedictine brothers at the Assumption Abbey,
