Days 44-45: Adrian, Mich. to Bowling Green, Ohio

Sunday we enjoyed an excellent day of rest with my aunt and uncle in Adrian. In the morning, my uncle drove us over to visit my great uncle, whose house it turned out we had ridden directly in front of on our way into town. He shared some stories of growing up on a farm nearby which made our long days of bicycling seem like casual recreation. In the afternoon, my cousins came over and we had a delicious barbecue, caught up, and played some lawn games through the day. It was nice to get to see everyone in Michigan, and my dad reveled in the magic of leaving his dirty laundry on top of the machine to find it folded on his bed later in the day.

This morning, bellies full of tasty breakfast and panniers full of fresh fruit and cookies, we headed south back over the Ohio state line into Bowling Green. Despite some clouds and humidity, we had dry conditions the whole way. We did fight a little bit of wind, but with only 60 miles and a good amount of cover from trees along the way, it felt like a lighter day than we had for much of the trip. After crossing the river in Grand Rapids, Ohio, we were only one street away from the Adventure Cycling route again, which we will rejoin tomorrow and follow all the way to Cleveland.

In Bowling Green, we walked around the campus, had a gyro, and checked out the local brewery. We noticed a bunch of coasters from Oregon breweries on the wall, and learned that the owner is from Eugene.

We will be watching the weather tomorrow, but hope to make it to Huron, right on the shore Lake Erie.

  2. I am sure you felt well-fed and well-loved with your stop in Michigan. Ed's experience with laundry at his sister's is much like his laundry experience at home with his wife. Hmmmm. He is a master at getting other's to do things for him. Oh, he is a VP. lol
